چکیده

R esum e I develop a model under which workers with di erent marginal productivities self-select into rms based on the rm's seniority reward policy. I show how this may bias upwards the estimates of returns to seniority in cross-sectional and even some longitudinal studies, when di erences in workforce composition are ignored. I develop a new estimator of \true" returns to seniority and empirically test the implications of the model. I show how several previous estimation strategies over-estimate returns to seniority, particularly in rms that o er zero or negative returns to job seniority, using a large longitudinal sample of French rms and workers. The objective of this paper is to provide a comparative assessment of the consequences of worker displacement in France and the United States. I estimate wage losses of displaced workers in the two countries and examine the relative contribution of two important sources of post-displacement wage adjustments. The first one relates to the loss of seniority-accumulated firmspecific earnings potent...

Discretizing Unobserved Heterogeneity∗

We study panel data estimators based on a discretization of unobserved heterogeneity when individual heterogeneity is not necessarily discrete in the population. We focus on two-step grouped-fixed effects estimators, where individuals are classified into groups in a first step using kmeans clustering, and the model is estimated in a second step allowing for group-specific heterogeneity. We anal...

Série Scientifique Scientific Series No 95s-27 WAGES AND MOBILITY: THE IMPACT OF EMPLOYER-PROVIDED TRAINING

Résumé Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) for the period spanning the years 1979-1991, this essay examines the impact of employer-provided formal training on the wage profile and on the mobility of young Americans making their transition to the labor market. By exploiting the longitudinal aspect of the data set, we are able to provide some control for unobserved in...

Modeling Endogenous Mobility in Wage Determination

We evaluate the bias from endogenous job mobility in fixed-effects estimates of workerand firm-specific earnings heterogeneity using longitudinally linked employer-employee data from the LEHD infrastructure file system of the U.S. Census Bureau. First, we propose two new residual diagnostic tests of the assumption that mobility is exogenous to unmodeled determinants of earnings. Both tests reje...
